1 | The answer of a good conscience...God. | 1 Pet 3:21 | Ray | 78458 | ||
Is not this verse a good place to start with a clean slate and open mind? Consider that this verse is a definition in itself of baptism. I offer this literal translation by Jay P.Green, Sr., editor of a Interlinear by Baker Book House. 1 Peter 3:20, "...an ark having been prepared in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 Which antitype now also saves us, baptism (not a putting away of (the) filth of (the) flesh, but (the) answer of a good conscience toward God through (the) resurrection of Jesus Christ; 22 who, having gone into Heaven is at (the) right hand of God, (the) angels, and authorities, and powers being subjected to Him)." I submit to you that this parenthetical verse gives us the answer of what baptism is. Note the phrase in the NASB for a shorter definition. Note Acts 8:32-37 for an example of "the answer of a good conscience toward God". The eunuch recounted, declared, related His generation to us. "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."
