1 | The Blessing of Our Present Protection! | 1 Pet 1:5 | Morant61 | 21702 | ||
A Study of 1 Peter 1:5…………………………………………………… We have seen thus far that - 1) 1 Peter 1:3 deals with our past reception of the new birth. 2) 1 Peter 1:4 deals with our future inheritance. Now, we are going to see that the blessing of our salvation are not confined to the past, nor limited to the future, but are being enjoyed even in the present. Peter says that we "….are being shielded by God’s power" (1 Peter 1:5). The word translated ‘shielded’ is the Greek word ‘phroureo.’ It is a term which refered to the placing of a garisson within a city to protect it militarily. Sometimes it was used of placing a military unit around a city to keep watch. This appears to the be the way in which this term is used in 2 Cor. 11:32 - "In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me." Either way, the meaning of this term is clear. We are being guarded, kept, protected, or watched by God Himself. It is His power that is the source of our protection. Surely, Peter’s audience would have been reminded of other promises in Scripture. Promises like: 1) Rom. 8:31 - "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?" 2) Rom. 8:37 - "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." 3) John 8:28 - "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand." This protection has a purpose. It is in place to keep us until "…the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time" (1 Peter 1:5). This was a tremendous word of comfort for those who were suffering intense persecution. God has a purpose for our lives. He gave us new birth (v. 3). He has an eternal inheritance awaiting us (v. 4). And, He is actively protecting us to make sure that we reach the final goal (v. 5). The thought is clear. God is in control, not those who are persecuting you! They may have devised evil plans against you. They may want to see you destroyed. However, they are not in control - God is! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

I'm reminded of Psalm 91, especially the last verses. "Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation." Steve |
