1 | shamayim translated heaven | Deut 30:4 | Truant | 59674
Why, in the NASB, is the Hebrew word "shamayim" translated "earth" (...are at the ends of the earth...)? In the amplified the word is correctly t'd "heaven", the definition (of shamayim) meaning to be lofty, the sky, aloft.
2 | shamayim translated heaven | Deut 30:4 | EdB | 59679
Truant Your quite right Strong’s gives shamayim the meaning of heaven or sky, however it is also an unused word and the exact meaning is vague and applying that meaning here is questionable. The passage Deut 30:4 is speaking of the final redemption of Israel, where God will literally gather together the children of Israel from the furthest out reaches of creation and bring them together in the promised land. Obviously since he is talking about living humans they are not going to be coming from heaven, nor the sky but rather from the earth. Therefore to convey the intent of the passage the word earth is used. NKJV uses the farthest parts under heaven. The idea or thought here is God will seek them out wherever they have traveled. EdB |
