1 | What is the "Congregation of the Lord/" | Deut 23:2 | Praze2theLord | 147465 | ||
“Congregation of the Lord,” what is it? Is this considered all of Israel (actually as well as spiritual), or is this leadership, elders of the religious community or political or possibly both? I’m going through the Bible using the One Year Bible and these two verses in Deuteronomy 23 have arrested my attention. (Verse three: An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even to their tenth generation their descendants shall not enter into the assembly of the Lord forever,) I know that Ruth, Naomi’s daughter-in-law was a Moabite and she was David’s grandmother (1 Chronicles 2:10-13) so how does that fact fit in with what the third verse of Deut 23 states. I’m thinking that all of this, verse 2 and 3 has something to do with lifestyle choices and that is what causes you to be Israel and or a Moabite. Judah produced two sons out of wedlock and by his daughter-in-law (Gen. 38) Tamar who were in Jesus’ lineage. And yes I know that this discretion happened before the Law was given to Moses. Also one of Israel’s judges, Jephthah was born out of wedlock (Judges 11). So what does this all mean? |

Praze2theLord, greetings This is all about Israel. Ruth had to have been 10 generations. This is NOT about Christians. There is danger when we spiritualize and try to apply promises and penalties that aren't ours. Though most of thet time, we only take promises OUT OF CONTEXT. Searcher |

Searcher, Ruth would have been the 12th generation per Matthew 1:17. However, if it precluded the taking of wives, then we wouldn't find the reaction we see in Nehemiah 13:1 so much later. (As simply a matter of observation, note that the "ten generation" phrase is not included in that passage. It might, therefore, be considered some kind of idiom. In Him, Doc |

Hey Doc, Thanks for your response. Does anyone want to take a stab at the illegitimate question? I guess I’m curious because I came out of illegitimacy and continued that “curse” by having two of my own which was B.S. (Before Salvation). Due to my own situation and my children’s, who are now grown, I’m interested in what breaks the cycle of “sin.” (That could be why I was stopped cold at those two verses (Deut. 23: 2,3)) One son has gone down that road and the other has not. Again, thanks for the comments Praze2theLord |

Hi, Praze... Jesus Christ is what breaks the cycle! See Romans 3:25; 1 Peter 4:1-6; Ephesians 2; Hebrews 9:12-15, etc. etc. Praise to the Lord, indeed! In Him, Doc PS I commend you in your persistence in reading through the Word! That is a good example for us all! |
