1 | Does Deut 21:22 refer to crucifixion? | Deut 21:22 | Elliot | 10191 | ||
The phrase "hang on a tree" was a euphemism for crucifixion in Jewish writings of the first and second centuries. The Talmud uses the phrase several times to refer to crucifixion. Modern scholars genrally agree that much of Deuteronomy is pre-exilic in composition and the final form was compiled in early post-exilic times. certainly before the Hellenistic period when the Jews would have come into contact with crucifixion as a means of punishment. Does anyone know of any commentary on this text from deuteronomy and is it thought that "hang him on atree" refers to crucifixion as a means of execution? Elliot |

"21:22-23 Hanging was not the usual means of death but a sequel to death, in order to expose the corpse to ultimate disgrace. See note on Gal. 3:13." (Ryrie's Study Bible) "21:22, 23: 'hang': The guilty person was not hanged by the neck; this form of execution was not practiced in ancient Israel. The hanging was actually an impaling of the corpse for public viewing after death by stoning. Everyone would know that individual had brought guilt on the community. The exposure of the corpse was limited to one day. For that day, it reminded people of God’s judgment on the sinner." (Nelson's NKJV Study Bible) "21:22-23 Hanging on a tree was not a means of execution but of displaying, as a warning, an executed criminal, who was under God’s curse because of disobedience to God’s law (cf. Josh 10:26, 27). Paul seized upon the verse to demonstrate Christ’s penal substitutionary death (Gal 3:13)." (Believer's Study Bible) "'put to death ... hung on a tree.' The offender was first executed, then "hung on a tree" (see Genesis 40:19), or, as the Hebrew for this phrase doubtless intends, "impaled on a pole" (see Gen. 40:19; Est. 2:23). "not leave his body on a tree overnight. Prolonged exposure gives undue attention to the crime and the criminal. under God's curse. God had condemned murder, and hanging on a tree symbolized divine judgment and rejection. Christ accepted the full punishment of our sins, thus becoming 'a curse for us' (Gal. 3:13)."
