1 | Elders anointing sick with oil. | James 5:15 | justme | 63696
In James 5:14 to 16. In these verses Elders are to be praying and anointing the sick, and prayers offered. There in verse 16 we are to confess our sins to one another. I think the anointing with oil is an act of obedience. Why have many pastors and elders neglected these instructions? Would not these instructions, for the churches sick, be much like an ordiance of baptism or the Lords Supper? I do not think these verses say the person will be healed for sure, but that if sin brought on the sickness the sins will be forgiven. Any one have some thoughts on this? justme |

justme, Your understanding is in line with the Catholic understanding of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. See this article on that sacrament from the Catechism. http://www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/heal2.html#SICK Emmaus |

Emmaus:-) I would say my understanding is Biblical. The Catholic Church has the correct understanding of the verse. My question is who are the Elders in the Catholic Church? Have you ever seen this happen, or had it done to ssomeone you know? As a pastor I have done this on several people who were very ill. I believe unless the Universal Church begins to return to the instructions left to us, we are missing a huge blessing. Thank you for your imput. justme |

4 | Elders anointing sick with oil. | James 5:15 | Emmaus | 63710
justme, I have never received this sacrament myself, but was present when my wife did once before a surgery several years ago. Very recently she was prayed over by our pastor, at her request during another medical crisis. She did not receive the sacramental anointing that time. She only asked him to pray over her this time, which he did. In the Catholic Church the preists and bishops are the elders. The biblical word for elders is presbuteri (sp?), which is the root for the English words prebyter and priest. Emmaus |

Emmaus: You and your wife are wise and faithful. I admire your faith and willingness to ask for prayer. Many never share their needs and then many miss the blessing of seeing the Lord work in wonderious ways. justme |
