1 | A promise or a biblical principle | James 4:8 | Hersch Wiley | 133722
In his book "How to Study the Bible for Yourself" Tim LaHaye reccomends keeping a Spiritual Diary of your Daily Reading based on the answer to 5 questions: 1. God's message to you today; 2. A promise from God; 3. A command to keep; 4. A timeless principle; and 5. Your (personal) Application. Many times A Promise from God and a timeless Principle seem to be one and the same thing to me. Anyone else have any experience with this. Thanks, Hersch
2 | A promise or a biblical principle | James 4:8 | dsmit | 133723
Hi Hersch, James 4:8 Says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" the context of drawing near to God James does not worry about intellectual analytical categories...he tells us to be humble, submit to God, stay away from sin, and purify our hearts. So if the goal of studying to "draw near to God" then analyzing the method used to study is probably not terribly useful...God sees our efforts and our hearts! It is probably far more useful to make sure that our hearts are right before God before we study and then leave the worrying about the details to the Pharisees! As James says, "But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:6-8 NASB) Be Good Dave |
