1 | Is the Greek "Protos" outer or first? | Heb 9:8 | helfafe | 26949
Why is the Greek word 'Protos' translated here as 'outer' in the NAS as opposed to 'first' as it is in other English translations and as the Greek definition seems to imply?

Greetings helfafe! When Jesus' flesh was torn at His crucifixion, so was the temple veil that symbolically separated men from God's presence (Matthew 27:51). When the High Priest on the Day of Atonement entered the Holy of Holies, the people waited outside for him to return. When Christ entered the heavenly temple He did not return. Instead, He opened the curtain and exposed the Holy of Holies so that we could follow Him (Acts 1:9-11). Therefore, before the Way into the holy place (John 14:6) was disclosed, the outer tabernacle, where the people waited outside [since God was so inaccessible under the Mosiac covenant, apart from the death of Jesus Christ], was still standing (which would prove that "nearness" to God had to provided by another way (v. 12)). Therefore, the holy place was inside the tabernacle (Exodus 26:31-37), and the people did not have access to the "first" or inner Holy place until Jesus came to fulfill His mission. But the outer part of the tabernacle was not nearly as restricted. In this way, I believe that the NASB is contextually correct at this verse, rendering 'protos' as "outer", which agrees with the context of the verse. Blessings to you, Nolan |
