1 | When was Saul of Tarsus saved? | Heb 9:22 | DLD | 18190
When did Saul of Tarsus have his sins washed away? Was it on that road to Damascus when he met the risen Jesus, or was it later in Damascus? What scripture proves the point at which Saul was saved? Saul could not have been saved until his sins were forgiven. |

2 | When was Saul of Tarsus saved? | Heb 9:22 | Bill Mc | 18191
Dear DLD, I believe that Paul's sins, along with the sins of the world were forgiven at the cross. This is where the once-for-all sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins was made. God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not holding men's trespasses against them 2 Cor 5:19. I believe that Paul RECEIVED this forgiveness that Christ provided at Ananias' house when Paul received the Holy Spirit - Acts 9:17; Rom 8:9. Everyone's sins (acts of wrong doing) were forgiven at the cross. But, as you know, we need to receive it by faith. It is the same way with salvation. God provided salvation for the whole world at the cross but not everyone has received it. As it was with Paul, it is with us. When we, as sinners, come to God and confess that we've sinned, God is faithful and just to forgive us (because of Christ's sacrifice) and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness - 1 John 1:9. If there was any more forgiveness to be provided for you (or Paul), according to Heb 9:22, Jesus would have to shed His blood again. Obviously, that is not going to happen. I pray that this has answered your question. In Christ, Bill Mc |

3 | When was Saul of Tarsus saved? | Heb 9:22 | DLD | 18631
Without question, Jesus by dying on the cross paid the price for sin, yours and mine, everybodies. To receive that forgiveness we need to obey the gospel (2 Thess 1:8-10; 1 Peter 4:16-18) Paul tells us that it is the gospel by which we are saved, 1 Cor 15:1-2; cp Rom 1:16. So Saul of Tarsus needed to obey the gospel in order to be saved - yes! But what is the gospel (good news)? Jesus tells us in Mark 16:15-16 "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to everyone. He that believes and is baptised shall be saved ..." Matthew records it like this, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father ...". Luke 24:47 "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations ...". Therefore Jesus says that obeying the gospel is to believe - repent and be baptised. When Saul of Tarsus met Jesus on the road to Damascus he came to believe that Jesus was the Christ, cp Acts 9:20. He then asked Jesus "what must I do?" Acts 9:6 and was told to go into the city to be told what to do. Saul then spent three in repentance, (fasting and praying) Acts 9:9-11). Finally Ananias tells him what to do to have his sins washed away (by the blood of Jesus). Acts 22:16 "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptised, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord". This is what he did according to Acts 9:18. Saul received the Holy Spirit to proved he belonged to Christ, Rom 8:9, he became a child of God by his faith and baptism, Gal 3:26-27. In Acts 2:36-41 the apostle Peter having brought his hearer to believe that Jesus was "both Lord and Christ" told them, when asked, "What shall we do?" to "repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (v38) Those "that gladly received his word were baptosed ..." (v41). In several other examples in Acts we see the same pattern of events. Saul of Tarsus did not receive forgiveness of his sins on the Damascus road, but after three days of penitence was baptised, to wash away his sins. Unless we follow the same commandments of the Lord we cannot be saved today. |

DLD, you state, 'unless we follow the same commandments of the Lord we cannot be saved today.' Sorry, friend, but you're wrong. Following commands never saved anyone. Salvation is by faith in Christ and what He did, not in what you do. And you're worshipping the sign instead of what the sign points to. Water baptism is a symbol, nothing more, of what the Holy Spirit has done in placing us in Christ: 'For by one Spirit (not water) we were all baptized into one body (Christ's, the church)... (1 Cor 12:13) or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, so we too might walk in newness of life.' - Rom 6:3,4 Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward spiritual truth. Nothing more. If you make it more than that, it becomes works. Note that Paul says in 1 Cor 1:17 - 'For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach to the gospel...' This proves that water baptism is not part of the gospel. If it was, Paul would have said, 'For Christ DID send me to baptize, because it is an intergral part of the gospel.' But he doesn't say that. Instead, he contrasts them. The act of water baptism is mutually exclusive from salvation. Water cannot wash away sins. Heb 9:22 - "Without the shedding of blood, there is NO forgiveness (remission) of sins." Period. Repentance doesn't forgive sins, water baptism doesn't forgive sins, confession doesn't forgive sins. Only the shed blood of Christ takes away sins. It is non-negotiable. If you don't know that, then you don't know what He did. I'm afraid, brother, that you are caught up in legalism (any effort we make to make ourselves more acceptable to God or more godly than what Christ has done) and works. Did you ever try to get a dog to fetch something by pointing at it? He NEVER looks where you are pointing. He only looks at your finger. He has no perception of anything else. That what some sects of Christianity are like. The Holy Spirit has baptized, immersed, united us with Christ. We use water baptism to illustrate that truth and all people can see is the pointing finger instead of the spiritual reality. Christ can set you free from works, DLD, but you've got to see your need first. The Christian world is more under the law and works than the Jews ever thought of being. Satan knows that as long as he can keep your eyes focused on yourself and your actions, you'll never look to Christ and what His actions. Look to Christ, DLD. Rest in what He has done. Resting in Christ, Bill Mc |
