1 | why did jesus have to die for us | Heb 9:22 | AndrewSandler | 135836
What biblical references are there to explain and outline why Jesus had to die for our sins. How did his death free us from sin? What would have happened if he had not died for us? Was there a kind of contract between God and satan that mean't God's son had to die to free us from sin? I am born again but only very recently and I would really like to fully understand this. Thanks very much.

Welcome to the forum, Andrew! These are good questions. Jesus Christ paid the price that we could not pay. Paul tells us, "The wages of sin is death." If Christ had not died for us, than we would have to die for ourselves, and suffer eternal damnation. Christ saved us from the wrath of God, which is what we deserved. There was, indeed, a contract. It is called a "covenant" in biblical terms. The covenant was between God and man. Because Adam chose to break the contract, sin became a part of human nature. In addition, we have violated the covenant as well, by disobeying God ourselves. Through the atonement of Jesus Christ, a holy, just God is fully satisfied. Keep studying, son. There is a language (or jargon, if you will) to all of this. Keep asking questions. Keep attending a good Bible believing church. In Him, Doc "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." (Romans 5:6-10) |
