(Note: Originally I did not intend to submit what appears to be a "double post." It was only after I submitted this as a Note that I noticed someone else had asked a question regarding it.) For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. (Hebrews 7:12, NKJV) For when the priesthood is changed, there also has to be a change in the law. (Hebrews 7:12, TEV) "Since Christ is the Christian's High-Priest and He was of the tribe of Judah, not Levi (compare Matt 2:1,6; Rev 5:5), His priesthood is clearly beyond the law which was the authority for the Levitical priesthood (compare Heb 7:11). This is proof that the Mosaic law had been abrogated [abolished by authoritative action, annulled, nullified]. The Levitical system was replaced by a new Priest, offering a new sacrifice, under a New Covenant. He abrogated the law by fulfilling it (compare Matt 5:17) and providing the perfection which the law could never accomplish (compare Matt 5:20)" (page 1907, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). |
