Hello Ed, I think you are overly harsh here. Any seminary worth attending will investigate and compare the systematic theologies of various persuasions. There will also be an evaluation of the positions with Scripture in order to see why something is correct or incorrect. I also recognize that those who adhere to other theologies are brethren and fellow heirs with our Lord Jesus Christ in the glories to follow (which Spurgeon was getting at in Doc's quote). Steve |

Steve Systematic theology by definition is the methodical study of the all the teaching/events/concepts presented throughout the Bible and how they interact/interrelate to each other. How these ideas/teachings/events presented throughout the Bible come together with and merge with all the others, into one cohesive flow that reveals the truth about our Most Holy God and His precepts, statutes, ways, teachings, standards, laws, and commands. If during the study an idea or concept is presented or studied that conflicts with the rest of the concepts and ideas derived from the overall study of scripture then it can no longer be called systematic study but rather must be considered a biased study. There are many attempts at this in that there are many so called systematic theology books. They carry the flavor of their author’s favorite doctrinal positions. These are usually the preferred books of choice for school/colleges oriented in the school of discipline. However it they are viewed with even a most modest of open minds it is easy for the reader to determine which position the author supports and which he doesn’t. Of the very best systematic theology courses and course material that I have seen most made only passing mention of the specific theologies of either school of persuasion and focused instead only on what was scripturally supportable, systematically revealing God and His truths. Man throughout history has taken it upon ‘himself’ to answer for God in areas where God has remained silent. We can attempt to legitimize that by calling it theological study but in fact it is nothing more than the application of man’s reasoning/doctrine to the truths God has established. That in my opinion has no place in true systematic theology nor true seminary study. As to being harsh perhaps, but I find anyone that hopes that the these debates of man made doctrine that have so adversely effected Christianity and Christian church and the Study Bible forum in the name of Bible study continue, simply doesn’t have a concept of what is really at stake. That said, while you seemed grasped what Spurgeon I don’t think everyone has. If that seems harsh or unfair to you I’m truly sorry but having seen what these discussions on this subject has done in the past to this forum. I think we have to be harsh on those that want to reopen those wounds. Once more I remind everyone the ideas we are talking about have been debated without resolution for 500 years by the best religious/theological minds each generation has had to offer. In the past out come of all this has been devastation, with lost of relationships, property, family, country, and even life. My question to everyone is such a debate worth the cost? I say no. Particually when it does nothing for the kingdom of God. EdB |
