Silverbullet (Laura) - Thanks for your fine first contribution to Study Bible Forum. I thought your post was not only clearly and intelligently written but also presented with a keen sense of balance and mastery in the manner in which you weighed the issues. ..... You're not alone in your quest to find God's answers to some of the knotty and perplexing questions that we, all of us who take our faith seriously enough to think about it, have! I've struggled, studied, prayed, meditated, cogitated, ruminated and frequently become exasperated in my attempts to find a common ground -- and perchance a bedrock of truth -- in various theological systems, particularly in the two soterological systems that have come to be called Calvinism and Arminianism. There are those who say that if one is not Calvinist he is Arminian by default, and vice versa. I have long since abandoned the idea as poppycock that one must needs be altogether either in order to be a Christian. There were, after all, genuine Christians in the world long before either author of these two isms saw the light of day. ...... This evening I received an e-mail from an astute friend who is of a communion other than mine: I'm Southern Baptist. I quote in part from his e-mail: "Yes, we believe in predestination, and yes. we believe in free will, because they are both in the Bible. We just admit it is a mystery how they interact, and leave the details to God." ..... What a super e-mail that was! Wouldn't it be lovely if some of these hard-headed theologians who spend half their lives counting the number of angels that you can put on the head of a pin would simply "leave the details to God"? ..... A few of God's truths we understand. Many we don't. Shouldn't we keep focused on the things we do understand, leave to God the things we don't understand, and pray for the wisdom to know the difference? --Hank | ||||||

Hank, I am like you, in that. Doctrines are man's way of taking all of the scriptures and coming up with a belief based on the different references throughout the word. Doctrines are very important especially to new Christians, such as the attributes of God, the Godhead, the trinity, the atonement, etc. Since theologians took the time to gather a lot of scriptures into one place under those topics in a theology book, it makes the essential things easier to understand and reduces the possibility in believing in 'heresies'. When I was a new Christian (6 months or so), I read this book called 'The great doctrines of the Bible', and people laughed at me for reading a book that they used in seminary. LOL. But now I am taking a different kind of theology course. It gets right down to what doctrines are essentials for salvation, which are very important but not essential, and which are important only to certain groups or denominations. So on that forum where those taking that class are, we talk often about 'essentials', inerrancy, etc. Not that other things are not also discussed, and ther was a topic called 'TULIP' once, but no one ever indicated that a belief in Calvinism or Armenianism was a core doctrine for salvation. It is kind of like if I am a Calvinist, and I meet God in the afterlife, and find I was wrong in some of my Calvinistic beliefs, I will still be saved. And the same thing would happen if I were Armenian, among other 'non-essential' doctrines. So, knowing what the essentials are, if I do my best to study the scriptures, obey Christ, then it is ok if there are a few 'mysteries' here and there, and a few scriptures that I am not sure of. At least, that is how I see it. Thanks for the welcomes!! Laura |
