2 | Explain Rest in ver 1 to 12 | Heb 4:8 | Emmaus | 83909 | ||
eaglei35, Think of "rest" as in "Rest in Peace" that is rest in the Peace of Christ, who said "My peace I give you" and "abide in me." This passage, Hebrews 3:1 through 4:12 refers back to the children of Israel in the desert, who had seen God's miracles which redeemed them from slavery in Egypt and yet they still rebelled, disobeyed and did not believe in His promise. God did not allow that generation to cross the Jordan and enter into His rest in the Promised Land. See Numbers 12;7; Numbers 14:1-35; Psalm 95:11; Genesis 2:2; Psalm 95:11; Psalm 95:7-8. They are all being reference in this pasage of Hebrews 3:1 through 4:12. Jesus Christ is our Sabbath and our rest. The word sabbath means rest. After Jesus had completed his work of salvation on Good Friday, he "rested" in the tomb on the Sabbath. We rest in Him and his salvific work on the cross. Hebrews 4:1 says to us in warning, using the Israelites as an example: "Therefore, while the promise of entering into his rest remains, let us fear lest any of you be judged to have failed to reach it."
