We know from the new testament that there is at least some sort of a distinction between soul and spirit based on Heb. 4. If they can be divided then they are different. The hebrew and greek words though, that translate to the english words soul and spirit have different connotations. The hebrew word that is translated soul, 'nephesh' refers to the whole immaterial man. See Gen 2:7 spirit, soul, mind, heart, conscience, etc. The New Testament word, 'psyche' (from whence we get english words like psycholgoy) has a much more express meaning, although not all together consistently, of mind. The greek word, 'pneuma' which is translated spirit here in Hebrews has a meaning of the immaterial part of man created expressly in the Image of God, entirely nonphysical, and eternal. royfish |
