Thank you Doc. So for those who might not understand the word advent, you are saying when Christ came to earth the first time until He comes in the future the second time. What would you say to people who want to look outside of the Holy Scriptures for guidance from God? Is the closing of the canon the reason we do not do this? Sincerely, Val

Hi, Val... Advent is just an old fashioned word that simply means "coming into place." In a Christological sense, I think of advent in three ways: Christ's appearing in the past (the nativity); Christ's appearing in the present (our life in Him); and Christ's appearing in the future (His return). As I tried to explain to BMyers, God's providential love for the church is staggering. He carefully provides for us all that we need for saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. Then, because we live by every word of God, He graciously bundles it into text. Incredibly, He provides us a fully sufficient, necessary, clear, infallible, and certain set of truth. There are three enemies of that truth: the flesh, the devil, and the world. What better way to protect it from the corrupting influence of these enemies than to set it down in writing. I don't think we'd stretch things by saying that for this very purpose was writing given to man. (Remember Kay's assertion that "God's provision always proceeds our need?") I don't think we can do anyone any better service than to keep pointing them to a high view of Scripture. The flesh will always try to tailor interpretation to feed our ego, lusts, and affections. The devil will always try to offer up an alternative explanation that steers us away from the Lord, questions His veracity, or impugns His purpose. The world will always try to systematize all of this into a standard of alternate authority. So we get in behind the Holy Spirit, reminding all men -- and reminding ourselves -- that the Scriptures require our full acceptance, our full affection, and our full compliance. In Him, Doc |

Thank you for your encouragement, ma'am. I'm not original, at least I hope not! We don't expose truth that no one else has seen, we expose truth gifted to the church for many generations. When it is all said and done, let us pray that people don't remember Docs and Vals... but that they remember the Lord Jesus Christ in all His authority, majesty, and glory. (Luke 17:7-10)
