As I see the Book of Hebrews, the main city emphasized throughout is that of the church and her superiority to the Judiasm and the Law of Moses. Is that what you're trying to say? This seems to be further endorsed by the fact that it's God who adds us to His church, living stones as Peter calls us in 1 Pet 2:4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." Please confirm...just curious. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

I agree, and this is further confirmed in Ephesians chapter 2. I hate to call these things metaphors, because they are more literally true than any metaphor. Yet in Ephesians 2 it says that we are built up into a temple (and habitation for the Lord) in which we are living stones. But in all of these passages city/temple/habitation/body/etc. are talking about Christ Himself. Hence my comment.

Doc, I wholeheartedly agree with your general comment about metaphors. Too often, I fear, do some post-modern exegetes revert to calling metaphorical or allegorical that with which they, following the guidelines of "higher criticism," disagree. ...... By the way, I applaud your inclusion in your user profile of the fine quotation of Adrian Rogers, one of today's truly outstanding apologists of the faith. --Hank

Spock once said, "You humans are so dependent on language, yet so few of you are masters of it!" Thanks for the compliment... I hope quoting Spock won't lower your opinion of me! :-) |

Doc, quoting Spock is fine with me! What's more, Spock's right. Few things are more important than having a knowledge of the exact meaning of words and being able to use them to form clear sentences that make sense. Speaking of sentence sense, this evening our Bible study group had an interesting discussion of Job 22:25. One member read the verse from the KJV, thus: "Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defense, and thou shalt have plenty of silver." His exegesis of the verse differed markedly from mine. I was using the NASB, and the sentence dynamic was remarkably different, to wit: "Then the Almighty will be your gold and choice silver to you." ..... Quite a difference, no? --Hank

Quite a difference! I love the KJV, but I use the NASB for study. Our congregation is switching -- en masse -- to the ESV for consistency sake. I'm okay with that... except that I can't quite get used to its cadence. The KJV and NASB seem to have retained the cadence -- or at least a sense of it -- in the original language. I also had a hard time with tossing out "Woe!" and replacing it with "Ah" (or some similar sound). I guess I'm so used to the "Woe" that anything else sounds funny. One last thing I do miss from the KJV is second person plural... which is lost entirely in all modern translations. :-(

Our (Southern Baptist) congregation is a virtual Tower of Babel when it comes to Bible versions (but not doctrinally, I hope!). Only recently our pastor made the change from KJV to NKJV in readings from the pulpit. Some cling still to the KJV, some NKJV, others NIV, NASB, etc. It's a very large congregation and we have no really "official" version. I suppose it's nigh impossible to regiment Baptists! ...... It has become somewhat of a standing joke that the publishers of each new translation predict for their new entry that it will become the "standard" of the future, the translation by which all others will be measured. Frankly I don't see in any of the newer translations the makings of a clear and enduring front runner to equal the position the KJV held among English speaking peoples for so many years. The RSV was never accepted by most conservative camps nor is its sequel, the NRSV. The NIV is still popular with a large group of Bible readers, chiefly the younger set. The NASB finds favor among the more scholarly and the NKJV among those who pine for the music and poetical qualities of the KJV but who struggle with its archaisms, as well as those who feel more comfortable with the so-called Textus Receptus. The KJV still has its adherents, of course, and unfortunately these include, but are not limited to, those who have made a fetish of proclaiming the KJV the only translation inspired by God. It's probably a trifle early to get a good reading on the ESV (English Standard Version) and the HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible). The ESV will likely find favor, for example, among former users of the RSV/NRSV. The Baptists probably hold the key to the success or failure of the HCSB, and it remains to be seen how many of them will switch to it as their version of choice. I found it of some interest to note that the HCSB publishers have recently introducted three new editions of this translation, one for the Army, one for the Navy, and a third for the Marines. I suppose they can explain why different branches of service require different editions of the Bible. I certainly can't :-) --Hank
