Hi James, Welcome, I agree with BradK, Heb 11, Is a very good place to look at faith and the faithful. I would just like to add a few things. Here are some other things we should consider. In todays modern way of thinking faith has sometimes been given a much diminished interpretation. Faith today can simply mean a positive attitude or self confidence, and also just believing in God is not enough. James 2:19 "You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder." The Bible teaches that it [faith] is much more then that. In the Old Testament, faith is shown to us as something that the saints did, in simply believing in God, [and his promises.] Gen 15:6 "Abraham believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness." In Habakkuk 2:4 it is stated that, "the just shall live by his faith" The New Testament has more to say, in that faith, is a lifelong commitment. 2 Timothy talks about living for God in gratitude and by faith doing good works. 2 Tim 1:12 "For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day." But Paul reminds us that [salvation] is not by works, but by faith and not by keeping the law. Eph 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." After salvation, should come the good works, this an evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives toward our sanctification, and to bear fruit. So, faith is a belief in God, and believing in what Jesus has done for us by His atonement for sin on the cross, were He suffered for the sin's of all the world, past present and future. But also, a lifelong commitment to do his will as best we can. With the help of the Holy Spirit of course. Because without "His help", no one by their one power of will, could really and honestly do that. God bless. John |
