1 | the TNIV and the "new" NIV | 2 Tim 3:16 | justme | 230689
Has anyone checked the newest 2011 NIV against the TNIV? Zondervan says that is is different fron the TNIV. As some here on the SBF can recall when Hank and several of us previewed the TNIV many felt the TNIV was a huge mistake. As it turned out Zondervan stopped publishing the TNIV. My question is the new NIV really that much different from the TNIV? PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE READ FOR YOURSELF AND KNOW FOR SURE THA DIFFERENCE |

Hello justme, Interesting question you pose. As I've mentioned before, I have one of the few known copies of the TNIV:-) I bought it for reference several years back. It did not sell well, and, as you noted, was discontinued from being published. I was not a fan of it per se (nor the original NIV) as I prefer more literal translations. The biggest criticism (from scholars) of it was due to it's supposed intent on being "gender-neutral". Though the TNIV translation committee may have denied it, this attempt really came out of feminist ideology (IMO). I have not read the new NIV, though I have it on my Logos4 software. I still much prefer the NASB, the NKJV- and more recently the ESV. That being said, Dr. Dan Wallace of DTS, has given a surprisingly favorable review of the new NIV. He is Professor of NT Studies and a noted textual critic, so his comments are not without merit! It is a 4-part review and may be worth your reading. I found it both informative and quite interesting. You can read the review at this link: http://www.reclaimingthemind.org/blog/category/dan-wallace-contra-mundane/. I hope this is of some help, BradK |

3 | the TNIV and the "new" NIV | 2 Tim 3:16 | justme | 230696
BradK: I too have a TNIV. The Lemstore bookstore I go to returned several boxes of TNIV Bibles about a year ago. Mostly they sstayed on the shelves, just a very few were sold, mine was one. We keep it by itself with a note attached. I was one with Hank and others were somehow selected to review the TNIV before actual punlication. Hank and others like myself gave it a thumbs down, to say it politely. I have used the NIV form the time it first started in 1978. The 1984 is a very much improved version. I have used the NASB from the first edition. The Updated NASB is so much better than the first one. The Open Bible NASB was made with the first edition and is really great, I wish they had kept that with the Updated NASB, and they did attempt it but was not nearly as good. One sad fact is the NASB is not a real good seller. Lockman has done little to promote and advertise the NASB unlike the ESV that has had a huge blitz to promote the ESV. The Lemstore store Ig to has maybe 15 NASB's and they often sit for many months before being sold. Personally the NASB is the Bible I use almost all the time. Thanks for the web site, blessings. justme |
