Hi, canawedding... It means to believe in the gospel, in other words, to have faith in what God has said. One of my favorite, still living, theologians says it this way: "To the question, 'What must I do to be saved?' the old gospel replies: believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. To the further question, 'What does it mean to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ?' its reply is: it means knowing oneself to be a sinner, and Christ to have died for sinners; abandoning all self-righteousness and self-confidence, and casting oneself wholly upon Him for pardon and peace; and exchanging one's natural enmity and rebellion against God for a spirit of grateful submission to the will of Christ through the renewing of one's heart by the Holy Ghost. And to the further question still, 'How am I to go about believing on Christ and repenting, if I have no natural ability to do these things? it answers: look to Christ, speak to Christ, cry to Christ, just as you are; confess your sin, your impenitence, your unbelief, and cast yourself on His mercy; ask Him to give you a new heart, working in you true repentance and firm faith; ask Him to take away your evil heart of unbelief and to write His law within you, that you may never henceforth stray from Him." --J. Hello Doc, In Mk 1:14-15, Jesus Christ told us to repent and believe after John the Baptist went to prison. It is very important to sincerely repent. 1Jn 3: 6. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not. Whosoever sinneth, hath not seen Him, neither knoweth Him. We were also told to believe and that is the same Gospel Truth as having the faith Paul described in Ro 1:16-21. There, Paul told us that the Gospel reveals a Righteousness of God from faith unto faith. Does this have to do with Mt 6:33? Yes, it does. We cannot continue to belong to the Law of Sin and Death, we must belong to the Law of the Spirit of Life. That cannot take place until we seek first and find first according to Mt 6:33. We must go through the narrow Gate and travel on the narrow Road to belong to the Law of the Spirit of Life. Paul also wrote that the Gospel is the Power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes. That Power from on High was promised by Jesus Christ in Scriptures such as Lk 24 and Ac 1:1-11. In 1Co 1, we read that Power of God becomes our Wisdom from God, Righteousness, Sanctification and Redemption through Jesus Christ. This is the anointing from the Holy One that John wrote about in 1Jn 2, the anointing that teaches us. This is what it means to put on the Armor of Light that is Jesus Christ, Jn 1:1-18; Ro 13:12-14. There truly is something very specific that those of us with the Scriptures must seek first according to Mt 6:33 before we can put on the Armor of Light and let our Light shine. Read Ac 13 for a perfect example of Paul's preaching. Especially notice: Ac 13:47: For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee for a Light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the uttermost part of the earth. 48. And as the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the Word of God and as many as were ordained to eternal Life believed. 49. And the Word of the Lord was spread abroad throughout all the region. In the service of the Righteous One, anne |
