1 | 4 Principles of Interpretation | 2 Tim 2:15 | Hank | 52073
It should be, I believe, a matter of grave concern to all Christian believers that we obey the injunction that Paul the apostle issued to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15, to handle with accuracy the word of truth. All of us have witnessed on this forum as well as on other media case upon case wherein a verse or passage of Scripture is plucked from its normal context, isolated, and used to promote a denomination bias of one sort or another. Last evening I read an article by Dr. Paige Patterson that appears among the back pages of the Believer's Study Bible published by Thomas Nelson. Dr. Patterson offers four principles of Bible interpretation and what follows is a summary of those principles. ....... [1] The Principle of Divine Illumination: The most important of all principles was given by the Lord when He promised the arrival of the Holy Spirit. "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit...will teach you all things." (John 14:26). Any believer who will ask the Author of the Bible to be his personal teacher will experience astonishing insights into God's word. [2] The Principle of Contextual Interpretation: No verse should be interpreted in isolation from its context. Both the immediate context and the larger context may need to be carefully considered. [3] The Principle of Clarity: Difficult and apparently ambiguous verses should always be understood in the light of the many verses that are perfectly clear. [4] The Principle of the Grammatical-Historical Method: Every effort should be made to understand precisely what the words mean as they are employed by the authors. The historical situation which produced the writing must also be the subject of careful investigation. --Hank
