1 | scriptural basis for church government | 1 Tim 3:1 | mimaburt | 36847
I need help!! Our government is based on elders running the church, with the people having no imput. The pastor is the head elder and he has appointed 3 more. We are a small church (100 - 135 members including children) In the past two years, our pastor has exhibited many disturbing behavior problems (anger, exaggeration to the point of lying, not visitng his congregation, spending money without knowledge of his elders (his wife is the bookkeeper, etc.) In the four years since I've been attending, he has had 5 secretaries, each one leaving because they cannot deal with the anger problem. Now, two of the elders have stood against him and the other elder, trying to get this back in 0rder. Please help me with what the scriptural basis is for church government and what the pastor's role is. Please pray for us! Thanks! |

It seems to me that this Pastor has a personal conflict with matters of this world. You must be patience with him. Being against him is not the answer. Rather stand with him, and help him through this crisis. One of the ways is to confront him, and let him know that his behavior is not proper for a Pastor. Perhaps someone should read to him the verses in 1 Timothy 3. If he continues to deteriorate as a Pastor, then he should humbly retire, rather than to be expel.

Dear Mimaburt, It sounds like you have a serious problem in your church. I pray God will restore unity and peace and justice to your fellowship. As I understood your post, it seems like the pastor is accountable to the elders but not to the flock. The elders are appointed by the pastor himself and the flock has no vote or veto on the pastor's choice of elders.(To me that seems like a shakey proposition). I hope someone who is well versed in Biblical Chuch government will respond to your question. If thats the way your church is organized, the flock better get together and come up with a new form of government. I must confess I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to this kind of problem. And all I can offer is my personal opinion for what it's worth. I would call upon the men of the church to meet with the leadership, express their concerns and demand accountability from those leaders. And I do mean the MEN! Pray for your men that God will open their eyes and awaken them to their resposibilities. We have been given a Spirit of freedom in Christ and not a spirit of bondage. We fear God, we do not fear man! God Bless you Sister, Your Brother in Christ John Adams PS: Rom 8:28 "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." |
