There we're some women in Paul's day who were not very modest. These women lacked the character that the holy women in old times possessed. The women in old times trusted whole-heartedly in God, and was totally submissive to their husbands.(1 Peter 3:1-6) But not in Paul's day, as you can see in verses 10 and 11 of 1 Timothy. They was loud and disruptive during church services. They even dressed the way the harlots of that era would dress. Paul was not against the plaiting of the hair like we do today, what had happened was, the women would braid their hair with pieces of gold, as decoration, running all through it. They would wear expensive, tight-fitted and skimpy clothing as well. The only women, in Paul's day, who would put on this kind of show, was the harlots (prostitutes) and the women of the world. Paul not only addressed this issue in Timothy's church, He also addressed this issue in the church at Corinth. (1 Cor 11) Sad to say, alot of Christians today, (men and women) ignore these admonitions as well, applying these principles to "Paul's era", and not for us. Some of us focus a little too much on the outward adornment as well, when, what is really precious in the sight of God, is the hidden man of the heart, "ornaments" of a meek and quiet spirit. The Prince of this world is using his people to transform some of us instead of the other way around. | ||||||

Dear humility, While I agree to the central idea you wanted to convey, I still find you have stretched a bit too far: "Paul was not against the plaiting of the hair like we do today..." I am sure Paul has no idea what the women and the world would be like today :-) "They would wear expensive, tight-fitted and skimpy clothing as well." Could you please provide scriptural reference for the above as I might have missed it? Of course God sees the heart and hidden part of a man, yet, a person's dress code denotes certain message he/she wants to express silently :-) Shalom Azure |

Dear Azure, I think you read what I said just a little bit too fast. I said that Paul was NOT against the braiding of hair, I said He was against the style in which they did it. As they would braid their hair, they took melted pieces of gold and weaved it into their hair the same time. They also used gold as decoration for their hair. Paul thought all this was unnecessary. With the clothing issue, Paul did admonish the women to "adorn themselves with modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety;not with braided hair, or gold, or COSTLY array (expensive clothing)". Thanks for correcting me on the "tight-fitted" and "skimpy" situation. I might of taken it a little too far there. Plz forgive me. |
