Hi, wo... Welcome to the forum! This thought is reflected in 2 Corinthians 2:15. When the redeemed are afflicted, Christ Himself is afflicted (Isaiah 63:9). According to the eternal purpose of God, Christ was to suffer afflictions in His body literally, as well as in the His figurative body, the Church. Consequently, the more each member of the body endures affliction, the less overall affliction remains to be endured (2 Corinthians 12:26). That's what Paul means by the word "deficiencies;" i.e., what still remains. Keep in mind that the afflictions of the Church have nothing to do with gaining merit or in order to pay for sins.
