1 | Are the Cushites mentioned in Numbers bl | Num 12:2 | gerroy | 203352 | ||
In Numbers 1:1-3 Aaron and Miriam were angry with Moses for marrying a Cushite. I beliewve the Cushites were also know as Midanites, who decendentants of Ham. Recently a friend said the reason they were angry was the Cushite was a black person. I have been searching and cannot find this in the scriptures. Gerroy |

Hi, gerroy... We are all inextricably bound to our culture and history. It sounds like your friend has some presuppositions that are influencing his exegesis. Aaron and Miriam were rebelling against the Lord Himself. There is no indication from Scripture that race issues were rooted in differences of skin color. They were rejecting Moses' wife because she was not a descendant of Israel. Their bigotry was rooted in issues of parentage. Our own culture, based on a specific history spanning centuries, thinks in terms of skin color -- something that has been imposed on thinking on people of all colors. Note that the ancient peoples were not prejudice free -- far from it! Prejudice is as old as humanity! -- they just didn't prejudge based on skin color in quite the same way that has been done in our times. In Him, Doc PS Of course, it would be quite ironic if they were thinking of Zipporah's skin color... since Miriam was turned awfully white! (Numbers 12:10) :-) |
