Hi, HWP... Welcome to the forum! That's a good question. There's a fundamental principle with a fancy name: "the analogy of faith." What it means is that the best explainer of Scripture is always Scripture itself. So let me direct you to Matthew 15:3-9 where Christ specifically explains that we do, indeed, have financial obligations to care for our parents. Clearly it is one we're not to weasel out of, too. In addition, we also learn from this passage that Christ is affirming the commandment in Leviticus 20:9. We have other passages that speak to how parents are honored. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 is pretty specific about how seriously our God looks at rebellion in children. Mockery and disrespect are also assuaged in Proverbs 20:20 and 30:17. Still and all, I think that any sin dishonors our parents. Note that I do not state that they deserve honor -- even the best do not, for they are, themselves, sinful. However, we do not render to others what they deserve, but what is commanded by God for the roles He has providentially given. My father, a convert to Christ later in life, has gone on to glory. Nevertheless, I still think about the fact that how I live either affirms his efforts to raise a son rightly, or denies those efforts. If your parents are living, I'd not think so much about what the minimum requirements are, but rather try to work out ways to honor them wisely and creatively beyond what is required. God will help you in those efforts, for He will empower you -- ahead of time -- to do the things He commands. In Him, Doc |
