1 | How should we view God's righteousness? | Eph 6:18 | RealTruthAlways | 161718
Why is the breastplate described as faith and love in 1 Thess. 5:8 and strictly a breastplate of righteousness in Ephesians 6:14? Should these scriptures be taken together to get the full view of this piece of spiritual armor?

Hi RTA, That's a great question- and one I hadn't really thought about before! Here are my thoughts: There is an interrelationship between both verses- Eph. 6:14 and 1 Thess. 5:8. The "breastplate of righteousness" in Ephesians is the righteousness of Christ! ( 1 Cor. 1:30, 2 Cor. 5:21) We are brought into that righteousness by faith. So, as I see it, the "breastplate of faith" described in the Thessalonians passage encompasses the righteousness of Christ. It's just not as specific as Eph. 6:14. Incidentaly, the description of the armor of God in Eph. 6 really lists the many spiritual blessings (1:3) we have in Christ! Paul just applies them as our armor in a spiritual battle that culminates with the exhortation, "... praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit". I hope this helps, BradK |
