Hi Cathy, I can't think of any references to "Praying TO the HOly Spirit", and my cursory search failed to find any either! What leads you to ask this? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

3 | Praying to the Holy Spirit | Eph 6:18 | cathysmith97 | 221605
Hi Brad, Thank you for getting back to me. The reason I asked was because my pastor said that Acts 13: 1-3 is an example of praying to the Holy Spirit. He said the apostles were praying to the HOly Spirit because "The HOly Spirit Said........" The pastor said that because the "Holy Spirit ANSWERED the apostles that means that they were praying to the HOLY Spirit. I disagree with the pastor and I am trying to find if there is any evidence to support his view. Thank you I think you disagree also. What do you think I should say to him? |

Hi Cathy, I don't want to second-guess your Pastor. However, if what you said is correct (and I don't doubt you), I would disagree with him, because I don't think there's evidence from the passage to support such an interpretation! Acts 13:2 reads, " While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." (NASB) The text does not say anything about the apostles "praying to the Holy Spirit". That is an assumption- rather speculation- that I do not believe is warranted from the text! We need to take care and not say what scripture doesn't say! Depending on your relationship with the Pastor, I'd ask him what support or evidence he can give to such an interpretation. What other scholars would agree with him? If he's not put off by being asked to uphold the Berean standard (Acts 17:11), he should be willing and able to do so:-) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Thank you for your response. I do intend to ask the pastor what evidence he gives to support his interpretation. I myself believe the pastor is incorrect. Thanks again.

Cathy, Ask your pastor why in Acts 13:2, the Greek for said is eipen not apokrinomai, which means to give an answer to a question proposed, to answerto begin to speak. Which I think would need to be the word inspired to use make prove his side. Note eipen (epo is the root) can be answer, as well as commanded and other words. Searcher |

God's day to you, Cathy. apokrinomai is to give an answer to a question proposed, to answer to begin to speak, but always where something has preceded (either said or done) to which the remarks refer http://www.biblestudytools.com/lexicons/greek/kjv/apokrinomai.html ... if you enter answer in the search window, you'll see other Greek words. For eipen, go to http://biblos.com/acts/13-2.htm ... select 2036, where you'll see epo ... with a list of related verbs ... there 613 occurrences of eipen. A primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from ereo, rheo, and phemi); to speak or say (by word or writing) -- answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), My Greek is not good ... but I think my choice is sound. May the words you say and mediation on your heart be acceptable to the Lord, Searcher |
