Dear CSM, I am not certain what this question has to do with Ephesians 5:22. Was that unintentional, or -- equally possible -- am I missing something there? Dr. Wayne Grudem in his Systematic Theology writes, "God's glory is the created brightness that surrounds God's revelation of Himself." Christ's first advent was accompanied by the glory of God (Luke 2:9). It was also manifested at the transfiguration (Matthew 27:2). God's glory will also accompany the second advent (Titus 2:13) and forevermore in the heavenly city in the age to come (Revelations 21:23). Of course, glory can also mean "honor" or "excellent reputation" (cf Isaiah 43:7, Romans 3:23, Hebrews 1:3). In that respect, I would commend you to three excellent papers: One by Dustin Shramek: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/8449/passion2.html One by John Piper: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/8449/forus.html And, of course, no writes as eloquently on such things as Jonathan Edwards: http://www.aplacefortruth.org/edwards.excellency In some sense, I also think of the glory of God as the display of His perfection and beauty. "There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a study of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity." --Charles H. Spurgeon In Him, Doc |
