Dear Shael, We've had this discussion before. Paul is describing the unity of the local body of believers. The unity is something that God has accomplished -- see the previous three chapters. It is a work of the Holy Spirit. It is only efficacious for believers (v4:1). Though it was done by God, we are to seek to maintain what God has done (v4:3), and do this by supporting one another in love and humility (v4:2). The unity is rooted in the unity of the Triune God (v4:4-6). However, we are empowered by grace to do what we ought (v4:8). In addition God has given gifts to the church (v4:12). This unity has to do with knowledge and maturity in Christ (v4:13). Indeed the purpose of this unity and grace and gifts is to grow up believers into the image of Christ (v4:16). In Him, Doc |
