1 | Definition of worldly sorrow? | Eph 4:30 | Bob Y. | 27794 | ||
2Cr 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.(NASB) In the phrase;"For godly sorrow" godly is Strong #2316 (theos) 4) whatever can in any respect be likened unto God, or resemble him in any way We might then read this as: sorrow, like the sorrow that God would have, leads to salvation... or as the NASB puts it "sorrow that is according to the will of God" What would make God sorrowful? Eze 18:23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: [and] not that he should return from his ways, and live? God becomes sorrowful when He sees people choose death through sin rather than life through His Son, Jesus Christ. Thus "godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation." Since God does become sorrowful over the death of the lost, and Jesus is the image of the Father (2Cor 4:4), whos sole purpose as an uncorruptable man was to die to pay the penalty for our sins (John 17:4) and give us the gift of eternal life, we can make the assumption that Jesus would also feel great sorrow for the lost. Unfortunately because of the hardness of their hearts, many have rejected Him and will experience death and hell. This is what brings sorrow to Jesus and makes Him the "man of sorrows" Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: Worldly sorrow is the sorrow that is the result of sin which leads to death. Psa 38:3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation; There is no health in my bones because of my sin . Because Jesus was uncorruptable, the sorrow He felt was never worldly sorrow. He never gave in to or coveted anything that was fleshly or material, thus the sorrow He felt could never be "worldly" (Matt 4:8-10) Jhn 14:30 "I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; (NASB) |
