Isaiah 11:1-2 “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.†Wisdom Understanding Counsel Might Knowledge Fear I understand this to be speaking of the various facets of ministry which Jesus was given to do, each individually empowered by the Holy Spirit. In the synagogue, Jesus read Isaiah 61, as He began His ministry, stopping just before reading “the day of vengeanceâ€, because He was not here to judge, but to save. And so here in Isaiah 11, six characturistics or empowerments are given, as Isaiah prophesies of the coming Messiah to save. The seventh is found in Isaiah 4, as he prophesies of the coming of the Lord in judgement: Isaiah 4:3 “And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: 4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.†These facets of ministry build upon each other. Knowledge is having the facts of a matter or situation. Understanding is correctly interpreting the facts, and knowing what they mean. Wisdom is knowing what to do with this information. Counsel is being able to instruct, advise, and direct others. Might is the ability to act. Fear is the fear of God, living in the presence of the Living God. Judgement and Burning has been reserved by Jesus for Himself. Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns (complete power) and seven eyes (complete knowledge), which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. In this passage in Revelation of the “seven Spirits of Godâ€, we are told they are “sent forth into all the earth.†This leads us directly to the Old Testament: 2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect (complete, full) toward him.†So the Holy Spirit is sent into the earth, to show Himself strong for those whose heart is fully towards Him. In 2 Chronicles, the context was of waging war with Judah’s enemies. What about in our lives? What is the Holy Spirit's ministry in the life of the believer, and in the church? In the believer: He seals our redemption (Ephesians 1:13, Eph 4:30) He renews us (Titus 3:5) and sanctifies us (Romans 15:16) He enlightens us to what is ours from God (I Corinthians 2:12-13) He teaches us (Luke 12:12, 1 John 2:27) He brings the love, joy, hope, and peace of God into our hearts. (Romans 5:5, Romans 14:7, Romans 15:3) Producing spiritual fruit in our lives (Galatians 5) Are any of these things we can do, or have, on our own? Of course not! What is the Holy Spirit's ministry to the church? Does the Holy Spirit have a ministry to the church? We know Jesus has specific things He does for the Church: "Upon this rock I will build My Church" (Matthew 16:18) "He might sanctify and cleanse it" (Eph 5:26) "He might present it to Himself a glorious church" (Ephesians 5:27) "For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church" (Ephesians 5:29) Revelation 5:6 “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.†What we read of the work of the Holy Spirit, beyond His ministry to individuals, is this: 1 Corinthians 12:7 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.†(for the profit of all) |

The ministry to the church, the Body of Christ, is through the Body. Go figure!! Each of us are called to a specific job. (Ephesians 2:10 “we are created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which He has before ordained that we should walk in them.â€) These roles He has assigned to us are for “the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.†The input from each person is needed for a healthy body. |
