"Some, under the pretense of being taught of the Spirit of God, refuse to be instructed by books or by living men. This is not honoring of the Spirit of God. It is disrespect to Him, for if He gives to some of His servants more light than to others -- and it is clear He does -- then they are bound to give that light to others, and to use it for the good of the church. But if the other part of the church refuse to receive that light, to what end dose the Spirit of God give it? This would imply that there is a mistake somewhere in the economy of God's gifts and graces, which is managed by the Holy Spirit." --Charles H. Spurgeon | ||||||

Trinsograce, Ph.D. As a teacher, I am willing to be taught. I want to know what others see the Bible says to them. I have needed correction in what I believe. I think Spurgeon and other teachers don't like to be challenged in what they say ... I know the latter is true. I have challenged experts when I see the Bible differently than they do. Most accept the challenge, while a few attack my credentials and myself. What you quoted about Spurgeon, I would challenge, asking for Biblical support. I would ask, even if I knew the answer. I do it at this forum. Searcher |

Hi, Searcher... Learning, studying, teaching, are all fundamentals of Biblical Christianity. I've never known teachers that didn't like to be challenged -- I'm sure there must be a few. When students challenge, it demonstrates that they are thinking -- of course, challenges based on something *other* than thinking, are a waste of everyones time and pure annoyance. However, when you don't get an answer, be careful not to interpret it as a teacher not wanting to be challenged. The reason you don't hear from Spurgeon is because he has been dead for about 112 years now. Dead men are a lot easier to contend with, though. :-) So, you really want scriptural support for the quote I gave? I should think that you would have run into it all before. Use your concordence and look up the following words: teach, preach, instruct, learn, study, etc. (Don't forget other conjugations of these verbs.) Note the example of the patriarchs, the commands of Moses, the words of the prophets, the example/teaching of Jesus and the apostles. Also, you will see that the Holy Spirit is involved in these areas in multiple ways. Remember, the Great Comission has the verb "teach" in it along with "go," "make," and "Baptize."
