Hello lidiagg, According to scripture, all believers receive the Holy Spirit upon salvation: Eph 1:13 "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, Eph 1:14 "who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." (NASB) Yet, we are implored to be (continually) filled (Controlled by) with the Spirit, " And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit," (Eph. 5:18) cf Gal. 5:16 How do you know you're "full of the Holy Spirit?". You will manifest the "fruit of the Spirit",(characteristics) "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;" (Gal. 5:22-23) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hello Curt, Good question. Here's the relevant verses from the NASB: Eph 1:13, "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, Eph 1:14, "who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." In the larger context, it's refering to our (gospel of) salvation- which was 'sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise' Specifically, the Holy Spirit is the 'pledge (or earnest) of our inheritance'. The bestowal of the Holy Spirit is God's part-payment of all the "components" of the salvation he gives us believing sinners. Salvation essentially consists in three parts, justification, sanctification and glorification. We, as believers have the first two parts now- we have been justified and sanctified (Rom. 5:1, 1 Cor. 6:11). Glorification is the (final) act of God transforming our present bodies into perfect, sinless, eternal bodies. As Wuest notes, "The Holy Spirit, indwelling the believer, is God’s earnest money, guaranteeing to him the future glorification of his body." (cf Rom. 8:30) [Wuest, K. S. (1997).
