1 | Fruit vs. Works: the same or different? | Gal 5:22 | Hiskid84 | 129749
Fruit vs Works: are they the same thing? Jesus said, in regards to bearing fruit, we can do nothing outside of Him (John 15:5). He says we must abide in Him. In verse 9, He says if we abide in His love we will keep His commandments. While doing a study today of John 15:5 and surrounding text, I realized I was trying to equate fruit with works. Is this an incorrect assumption? Are they two separate things? I'd greatly appreciate any Scripture showing that they are either equal or two separate things. In Christ, Karen |

2 | Fruit vs. Works: the same or different? | Gal 5:22 | JCrichton | 129750
Hi, Karen! These two are very similar... the fruits of the Spirit are the Gifts which we own personally: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23) These Gifts allow us to serve the Lord and to minister to both believers and nonbelievers. The works of the Spirit are the Gifts which we enherit and bond us to other Christians, and the world at large, in order to minister them on Christ's behalf: There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) Again, though we cannot bear fruits nor minister on behalf of Christ if we do not abide in Christ and Christ in us, there is a difference but also a codependency on the fruits and works! God Bless! Angel |

One small correction, Angel. The fruit of the Spirit is not plural; i.e., it is "fruit" not "fruits." Scripture uses the term "fruits," but it has other significance there. The fruit of the Spirit is not a variety of individual things. When present it is always all of the things of Galatians 5:22-23 and Ephesians 5:9. Thus, if a person is longsuffering, but is not loving as well, that person is not showing the fruit of the Spirit.
