Greetings Tlhunter54! The word 'lust' or 'epithumia' is used in both a good and a bad sense. In Phil. 1:23, Paul 'desired' to be with Christ. In 1 Thess. 2:17, Paul had an intense 'desire' to see his brothers in Christ. In 1 Tim. 3:1, it is a good thing to 'desire' to be an overseer. However, in James 1:15, 'desire' leads to sin. In 1 Pet. 1:14, we are told not to conform to evil 'desires'. And, in Col. 3:5, we are told to put 'lust' to death. The difference seems to be found in Gal. 5:17: " For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want." Desires which come from God's Spirit are good. Desires which come from our sinful nature are bad. Now, the question is whether or not the desire of a man for his wife comes from God or our sinful nature. I would say the former. Notice that the word 'lust', when used in a negative sense, is always connected with sexual immorality. Sexual relations between a man and wife are God ordained and not immoral. Therefore, I would say that 'desire' for one's spouse is part of God's plan for marriage. 'Desire' only becomes evil when we begin to long for that which we should not have - like someone else's wife! I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hello Tim, Oops, that means I erred. I answered this question with only an English translation on hand noticing the strictly negative connotation. Ah, well. Steve |
