The simplest answer which I can offer is that good works are the evidence of true faith in the life of a Christian. If a person does not have this evidence, I would suggest that he may not be truly saved. It is also important to realize that our good works are not really our's. They are a manifestation of Christ living in us. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
