What does the Bible say about tithing? 'The tithe is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was basically a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were to give 10 percent of everything they earn and grow to the tabernacle/temple (Lev 27:30; Num 18:26; Deut 14:24; 2Chr 31:5). Some understand the Old Testament tithe as a method of taxation to provide for the needs of the priests and Levites of the sacrificial system. 'The New Testament nowhere mentions the tithe system and nowhere recommends that New Covenant believers follow it. Paul states that believers should set aside a portion of their income in order to support the church (1Cor 16:1-2). The New Testament nowhere assigns a certain percentage of income to set aside, but only says it is to be “in keeping with his income” (1Cor 16:2). The Christian church took the 10 percent figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. However, New Covenant believers should not feel obligated to always give 10 percent. They should give as they are able, “in keeping with his income”. Sometimes that means giving more than 10 percent, sometime that may mean giving less than 10 percent. It all depends on the ability of the giver and the needs of the church. 'Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom for how much he or she should give (James 1:5). “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2Cor 9:7).' ____________________ Source: www.gotquestions.org/tithing.html |

Kalos: Your post brings to mind a thought I have never really come to a solid conclusion on, your or anyone elses opinion is welcome. For a person who is married and has say two children and is making just a dollar or two above minimum wage. For that person ten percent represents a lot more than sau a person making fourty thousand a year. I have believed more in sacrificial giving. Often I have heard of some who had to make a choice of not making a payment of giving. Some have even gone and given a "seed faith" (WOF) and still fell farther behind, and blamed GOD for not blessing them. I personally have a huge problem with those who give to get back. That is in my understanding of Scripture is not Biblical. I Pastoredthree churches that were in relatively poor comunities. Sometimes people coming to the church for assistance in utilities or food from the Deacon Board, made more money and had much more that me and my family, there was a total of six in our family. There were times that the Mission support funds were increased every year, but my salary was not increased in three years. I made know how difficult making our minimum budget. The blessing of the way Lord was to see how He used other people outside the church to help without being asked. These people were amazing in the fact they were used and blessed because they were sensitive to the Lords leading. I am sure that there are many Pastors that feel that the priority of caring for the Pastors needs are less important than the Missions fund or some other fund. Me and my wife, when budget time comes for the church, always make a suggestion that the pastor gets a raise. Because of what we experienced, we are more aware that the pastors needs must be a priority. I believe there is nothing more hurtful as to not show financial appreciation to the Pastor. We also experienced one church that went way overboard to make sure our needs were ment. There were only about 25 members, and were the most caring, loving people we have ever ministered with. Justme, I know what you're saying and I agree with you. To underpay one's pastor -- when a church has the resources to do better -- is definitely unbiblical. 'For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”' 1 Tim. 5:18 ESV And for someone to neglect his bills and the needs of his family so that he can make a larger contribution to a church or other ministry is poor stewardship. How does not paying one's bills honor God or give credibility to one's witness? The New Testament has much to say about stewardship, none of which can be used to justify foolish, impulsive, irresponsible giving. Nowhere in the New Testament will one find a loophole to justify underpaying his pastor or to get out of paying his own bills or providing for the needs of his family. Pay to all what is owed to them...Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:7-8 ESV For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 2 Cor. 8:12 ESV Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” 1 Timothy 5:17-18 Grace to you, John |
