Although there is somewhat of a controversy over this, mainline Christianity believes that 2 Corinthians 6 means to marry another believer; otherwise, you are unevenly yoked…a believer does not have much in common with someone who does not believe in God. See old Testament scriptures: Numbers 25:3 (New International Version) 3 So Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor. And the LORD's anger burned against them. 1 Kings 16:29-32 29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. 30 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him. 31 He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. 32 He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. 33 Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him. Even though these scriptures talk about interrelationships with other nations, the one thing that God did not tolerate was the worship of other gods. So my belief is that we should marry a believer (no matter what nationality or race) otherwise we will have a constant struggle and most likely give in on our morals or beliefs to try and satisfy our spouse. |
