Hello gibson, Thank you for your question. I'll try and give a short, yet concise response:-) First, note the action of the verse. It is God who: - Establishes us; - Anoints us Second, we are the recipients of this action. All believers are consecrated with the Holy Spirit here, as in 1 John 2:20. It is a one-time act just as the OT priests were anointed with oil- once. I find no 2nd or 3rd annointings in scripture! One either is, or is not! As Christ is the "Anointed" (as His name means), so He has anointed us with the Spirit. As the Bible Knowledge Commentary adds, "A further consequence of the Spirit’s presence is the seal of ownership (cf. Eph. 1:13-14) which also is accomplished at the moment of faith." To "anoint" simply means enduing the believer with gifts of the Holy Spirit. Here is the difference: All believers are annointed with the Holy Spirit. As Paul notes in 1 Cor. 12:4,11 "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit."... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills." (NASB) How is the word annointed misused? I think it is often given far more meaning and significance than is scriptural- particularly in WOF cirles! You hear, "he's really anointed", "they're anointed", etc. The fact is ALL believers are anointed! It has almost become a "mystical" power that only the few spiritually superior posses. As it's misused, "anointed" becomes the garment of the "spiritual elite", aka Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Todd Bentley, et al. Paul warns us in 1 Cor. 4:6, "..that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other." (NASB) We need to keep the meaning and use within it's scriptural context. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
