Hi, Edd... When we use the word sufficiency in modern English it tends to mean "just adequate" or "just enough." When the Lord speaks of sufficiency, it is far more all encompassing and more than simply satisfactory. Paul is being assured by God Himself that the removal of the "thorn in the flesh, messenger of Satan" (v7) was unnecessary because of the sufficiency of God's grace. (Paul even asserts ascribes something of the purpose for which God had given him this affliction.) Now, God, our sovereign Lord, might have simply said no, and we would not find fault with Him for doing so, for He has rightful authority over His creation. Nevertheless, He tells Paul that His grace is addressing all of Paul's needs. His reply to Paul might have well simply ended there. Yet He kindly further explains that Paul's inability and dependence on Him makes the work of God more clear, certain, and complete. Paul's response shows through so clearly his understanding of this grace. Not only does he humbly submit to the Lord's will, the apostle actually relishes it! It reminds me of Peter's effulgence in John 13:9. If the full display of God's attributes becomes more manifest through our sacrifice, suffering, or sorrow -- what is that to us (Matthew 13:44)? He is worth far more than anything we have to offer up (Luke 14:26-27). In Him, Doc |
