Greetings, A common message through out Paul's writings is Pride. Paul wrote a lot about the dangers of pride and this is one of them. He cam from a society based upon class and elitism. The higher up you were, the better you were. Paul is trying to prevent that here. He believed you shouldn't have any form of christian social classes. He also believed you shouldn't be bragging about what you have or what you can do or what you've been blessed with that others haven't been. He believed that if you want to boast and brag about anything, Brag about the power of God and Jesus Christ. For Paul, it is far better to Brag about God in order to build up the church than to brag about yourself. Paul states elsewhere that we as individuals are parts of a whole. We on our own are not as powerful or influencial than as we are when together. Quvmoh |

Dear Q: Good post; That was an excellent example of getting to the root of the matter. Thank you! Pride is a disease that will eat a christian, or anyone, from the inside out. But what is pride? What is it about pride that God hates so much? It hardly seems equal to, murder, lies, deceit, sexual perversion, rape, sodomy, or even, bestiality. Oh my, we don’t even want to mention that. Mass killings by suicide bombers that kill so many innocent mothers and innocent babies; Villagers hacked to peaces by machete wilding hooligans! Oh, how we cringe at the very thought! But pride, It seems so, benign…. After all, it doesn’t go round with a sword, removing the heads of the innocent: Does it? What is so bad, about pride? What was it that caused the fall of Lucifer? The most beautiful of all God’s Angels, the one that some say led the songs of praise to The Most High God! And what was it that he said to Eve in the garden that beguiled her and caused her to sin against God? Did he ask her to, lie, or steal, or kill, or dance naked in the street, or what? What was it? What was so bad about just taking a bite of the fruit, and why was she so willing to disobey God for a piece of fruit? Oh, he just said: --- "You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." Gen 3:4b-5... Is that what we want? To be like God? Now we know what that first sin of disobedience brought into the world, why it brought of course all the sins of all the world for all time, and all the horrible things we have seen before-mentioned and so much more. Yes, it is pride that is the father of all sin. Let us pray for the power of God's Spirit, to work in our hearts,... and break down that wall of pride that so deceitfully and vigilantly guards our hearts from God’s wonderfully redeeming and sanctifying grace... Shalom and God bless John I love what C.S. Lewis wrote: --"Pride can often be used to beat down the simpler vices.... Many a man has overcome cowardice, or lust, or ill temper by learning to think that they are beneath his dignity -- that is, by Pride. The devil laughs. He is perfectly content to see you become chaste and brave and self-controlled provided, all the time, he is setting up in you the Dictatorship of Pride.... For Pride is a spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense." - C. S. Lewis |
