Hi Philfromcal, I believe Paul is saying that he is not easy on himself, and is sometimes rough, to maintain mastery over his flesh appetites, lest at any time he would end up serving his flesh, and in so doing, cease to be able to serve the Lord. While we preach to others, and all the things we do to minister to them, we are all the more responsible to see to ourselves, that we do not allow sin the slightest foothold, and that we do not allow our bodies to rule over our spirits - the spirit is always to rule over the body. If what I have to do to accomplish this seems rough, so what? The prize is well worth it. Just as the boxer has to be hit to train himself to absorb a punch, so we need to deny our flesh, to learn how to live a life of denial of the flesh, to serve God. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
