What warning does 1Corinthians 8:1 give us about the effect of knowledge? | ||||||

"[Mere] knowledge puffs up" 1 Corinthians 8:1 The Amplified Bible NOW ABOUT food offered to idols: of course we know that all of us possess knowledge [concerning these matters. Yet mere] knowledge causes people to be puffed up (to bear themselves loftily and be proud), but love (affection and goodwill and benevolence) edifies and builds up and encourages one to grow [to his full stature]. 1 Corinthians 8:1 means what it says and says what it means: "mere knowledge causes people to be puffed up". So what is the key to humility -- ignorance? Is that what this verse means? To paraphrase a great American, knowledge of the Word of God is no vice; ignorance of the Word is no virtue. As money is NOT the root of all evil, but the love of it is, so mere knowledge is not a sin, although the arrogance that sometimes accompanies knowledge is sin. If knowledge is sin, then Moses, Paul, Peter, and John were great sinners. Grace to you, Kalos |
