1 | How do we live "as if" we had no wife? | 1 Cor 7:29 | Makarios | 12729 | ||
Hello Steve! I don't think that this verse teaches that marriage is no longer binding or important or treated with "seriousness".. And this is not saying that a partner should deprive the other partner of the sexual relationship of marriage. In my opinion, Paul is saying that marriage should not reduce one's devotion to the Lord. He wants us to keep our priorities clear. --Nolan |

Nolan, that is true. Paul has just counseled single persons, in view of the present crisis, to remain single (1Co 7:26). Should they, however, decide to marry, they would not be sinning. Yet, as married persons, they would "face many troubles in this life," and he wants to spare them this difficult time (1Co 7:28). There are four more "as if" contrasts, of various areas of life and work and relationships. The point Paul makes is simply that all of life must be lived in a new key, because we are new creatures. Even with the "present crsis" ... there could be a separation ... and we need to be prepared for it. Steve |
