1 | Misprint online or HC, confuses meaning | 1 Cor 6:18 | tellicojoe | 99498
your response outlines in more detail my question. Using this site's online resourse, porneia is the word translate here in NASB as immorality. However, in my hard copy NASB Hebrew-Greek Keyword Study Bible, the number by "immorality" is 265, corresponding to hamartema, "sin." Hamartema is the same word used later in the verse to refer to "every other sin." One of these resources must have a misprint as to what the original Greek word is, do you know which it is? Also, in 7:2, it uses (this time, porneia, the correct word for sexual sin) just "immoralities" in the NASB instead of sexual immoralities, as other versions use. I feel that this is a strong point Paul was trying to get across, and the designation of sexual versus all immorality seems important to the lession. The whole point seems to be keeping the body holy for God, so it's important to know what is sinning against the body. It is especially confusing because of the references beginning at 6:12 about food and the body. obviously, the ideal is not to sin at all, but for the purpose of studying this passage please help me clarify what I am reading. |

Greetings Tellicojoe! The number '265' should be associated with the 'sin' of the phrase 'every other sin'. The word 'immorality' in 1 Cor. 6:18 is 'porneia' or Strong's number '4202'. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

An excellent publication is the The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, which has the modern-language translation of the Westcott and Hort Greek Text, first published by them in the year 1881 C.E.

Greetings Jehonadab! I thought I was responding to you when I responded to CurtMan! :-) As I mentioned to him, I thought it might be published by the JW's. I would definitely not recommend their works. They have a long history of twisting the text to make it say what they want it to say. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dr. Jason BeDuhn, who teaches at the University of Indiana, made this comment concerning The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures,"I have just recently completed teaching a course for the Religious Studies Department of Indiana University, Bloomington, ...This is primarily a course in the Gospels. Your help came in the form of copies of the Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures which my students used as one of the textbooks for the class. These small volumes were invaluable to the course and very popular with my students...Simply put, it is the best interlinear New Testament available. I am a trained scholar of the Bible, familiar with the texts and tools in use in modern biblical studies, and by the way, not a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. But I know a quality publication when I see one, and your 'New World Bible Translation Committee' has done its job well. Your interlinear English rendering is accurate and consistent to an extreme that forces the reader to come to terms with the linguistic, cultural, and conceptual gaps between the Greek-speaking world and our own. Your 'New World Translation' is a high quality, literal translation that avoids traditional glosses in its faithfulness to the Greek. It is, in many ways, superior to the most successful translations in use today." |

Jehonadab - The Dr. Jason BeDuhn whom you quote would meet stiff resistance from many well-established Bible translators in his praise for the Watchtower's works, notably the New World Translation. Bruce Metzger and William Barclay, to name two, have spoken extremely unfavorably of this translation. Your posts seem sympathetic to the cult known as Jehovah's Witnesses. Are you of that group? --Hank
