1 | lawful vs profitable? | 1 Cor 6:12 | Mattityahu | 12080
What is ment by this verse? The normal explaination give to me is that the things of this world that are not sinful are not against the law, but do not help with our love and devotion for God. Is this taking the verse out of context?
2 | lawful vs profitable? | 1 Cor 6:12 | Makarios | 12084
Dear Mattityahu, This is a complex verse.. Ryrie's commentary describes it this way... "lawful. Apparently some of the Corinthians were trying to use their Christian freedom to justify their sins. Paul here insists that Christian liberty is limited by two considerations: Is the practice expedient (helpful) and will it enslave?" So anything this is not helpful or that will enslave should be considered as sinful and should be avoided. You are not entirely out of context in your reasoning, but the things that are considered as 'acceptable' or 'not against the law' according to this world are not the same things that are acceptable or permissible to Christians. --Nolan |
