Greetings! When you are asking about a specific verse. Check to see if there are any notes posted on it first. In put the reference. You will see the letters I, N,and C in boxes. If the N is green, there are postings about this verse.(You can "click" on the N to see what has been written an follow the thread.) I have copied a response that you may find helpful by Makarios: I believe that Paul is using his authority as an apostle of the church to direct the church to use their authority as a congregation to excommunicate the immoral brother who refuses correction from sin. Paul is speaking here in the best interest of the one who should be punished as well as that of the church. "5:5 to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh. This evidently means that the church was to discipline this sinning brother by committing him to Satan’s domain, the world (1 John 5:19), and to Satan’s chastisement, the destruction or ruin of his body (flesh means “body” here) through sickness or even death. destruction does not mean annihilation but ruin. Persistent sin often leads to physical punishment (11:30; 1 John 5:16-17)." (Ryrie's Study Bible) "Evil and Suffering, Satan—God can use Satan’s treatment of a person to discipline the person, leading that individual to repentance and restoration with God’s people. Satan does not intend to help a person towards salvation. Anyone outside the fellowship of the church is under Satan’s power. A believer cannot live under such conditions and will eventually return to God or die. Spiritual exclusion may lead to physical death but not to damnation." (Believer's Study Bible) --Nolan |
