Doc, You got me goin here... I am thinking about David, Bathsheba, Solomon and Jesus - there was no plan B, God allowed David and Bathsheba to sin and birth Solomon, but Solomon was always going to be on the throne of David and be in the direct line of Jesus. Despite that God hates all sin, and despite that He could have done it a different way, He choose by His divine sovereign will to do bring Jesus to earth in the flesh the way He did through David, Bathsheba, and Solomon -there was never going to be a plan B! God Himself told David by His very word that his seed would be on David's throne forever. I know that is not quite what you had in mind, but what you said got me to thinking. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. You also got me to thinking about this verse which is closer to where I bet you were; Romans 8:29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; (thinking myself about my earlier post today...) God's day to You, Tamara |

Hi, Tamara... What you are talking about is what the old divines called "second causes." "God has decreed all things that occur (Daniel 4:34-35; Romans 8:28; 11:36; Ephesians 1:11), and this He has done in Himself, from all eternity, by the perfectly wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably (Proverbs 19:21; Isaiah 14:24-27; 46:10-11; Psalm 115:3; 135:6; Romans 9:19). Yet He has done this in such a way that God is neither the author of sin, nor does He share with anyone in sinning (Genesis 18:25; James 1:13; 1 John 1:5), nor does this violate the will of the creature, nor is the free working or contingency of second causes taken away but rather established (Genesis50:20; 2 Samuel 24:1; Isaiah 10:5-7; Matthew 17:12; John 19:11; Acts 2:23; 4:27-28). In all this, God's wisdom is displayed in directing all things, as is His power and faithfulness in accomplishing His decree (Numbers 23:19; Ephesians 1:3-5)." --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (chapter 3, paragraph 1) ...but what you're also talking about, is the sovereign hand of God in the working out of His eternal purpose... "As Christians we know ... that in the life of a child of God there are no second causes, that even the most unjust and cruel things, as well as all seemingly pointless and undeserved sufferings, have been permitted by God as a glorious opportunity for us to react to them in such a way that our Lord and Savior is able to produce in us, little by little, His own lovely character." --Hannah Hurnard In Him, Doc |
