Greetings Sakura826a! Matthew, John Mark, Luke and the Apostle John were all inspired by God (1 Cor. 2:13; 14:37; 1 Thess. 2:13) so that using their own individual personalities and writing styles, they communicated God's perfect revelation to humankind; an errorless recording of the message of His Son Jesus Christ to all on earth, capturing the exact message that God desired to give to man. The Holy Spirit infallibly worked through each of these men, through their individual styles, to inerrantly communicate His message to humankind. These four men wrote their Gospels as they were 'carried along' by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). These four men just didn't sit down to decide one day that they would write down the story of Jesus. They were inspired to write what they did, by the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit was what inspired and dictated these men to write what they did. So, as you can see, the reason why there are 4 Gospels is because God wanted His message communicated in such a way, that four different men would uniformly communicate His message to all humankind, working independently of each other, but each fully inspired by the Holy Spirit. Blessings to you, Makarios |
